Perspective
Today is Wednesday August, 28 2013. It's 50 years since Martin Luther King's dream speech. I had never seen the whole speech until today. Your great grandmother, Elizabeth Hines was there that day. That is something that you and even your children will be able to take pride in someday.
Today in Washington at the celebration, the first Black President of the United States gave a speech. He spoke a little about how he is the result of Dr. King's dream. We are all building on the achievements of those who came before us.
It was a powerful as well as emotional moment for me because as I listened, I thought of the possibilities available to you as a young boy of color. My father, his father and me never thought that a black president was even possible. Growing up as a child in America, you are told you can achieve anything if you work hard... That is what we were told. However, we never totally believed that. The promise for you though is much different. The first president you will know is black. I cannot overstate how much this means for you and generations to follow. You truly have the promise of America in front of you. You can be anything you want to be including President of the United States or you can leave this country if you choose to carry our family name to a new continent. The choice is yours, Lennon. All I ask is that you never forget the people like Martin Luther King Jr and Elizabeth Hines who sacrificed so that you could have privileges they never did.
Love,
Dad
